Looking Good while Keeping Fit!

Katie here from La Spa…Exercise While Looking Good

Now that Spring has arrived we are all thinking about how we can get our bikini bodies back for Summer! Be it running, walking, step aerobics or in the gym, we all need to look the part while sweating it out!

So let’s start with our skin. If you are braving the outdoors then you will need to be protecting your skin, using a hydrating moisturiser that isn’t too thick is key, so that it will illuminate your skin without blocking the pores. Also use an SPF to protect against the environment. This will have your skin looking glowing, rather than over exerted!

Next is our hair. Even though we may have our hair tied up when exercising we still need it shiny and looking its best. A great way to achieve a high shine is to treat your hair with leave in conditioners and use heated styling tools as little as possible so as not to dehydrate the hair.

We all need a little help getting back into shape and I think that a good kick start is a great way to feel good when exercising. Two great treatments to help us along the weight loss or body toning path are the Universal Contour Wrap and the Endermologie machine. The wrap helps to eliminate fat cells using intense seaweed clay, offering guaranteed inch loss and the Endermologie is excellent for cellulite and body contouring.

With all of this help we will definitely look great in our trackies this Spring!

Recession Busting Beauty Tips

Katie here from La Spa…Recession Busting Beauty Tips

We women always want to know the secrets of saving money on our ever growing cosmetic bag! Especially these days when every cent counts….

Below are some top tips for a savvy make-up bag or cosmetic cabinet!

  • Did you know that most make-up products can be used in more than one way?A cake eye-liner can also be used as an eye shadow base to achieve a super hot colour on the eye, weather its black purple or brown cake liner, they can all be used as eye bases for your eye shadow.
  • You can also use your cake liner to add dept to your brows when doing an evening or a daytime look. Just use an eye liner rush and comb a small amount of your cake liner through your brows adding colour and dept with one application. You can use a shade that matches your natural brow colour or go a shade darker, if you’re brave enough!
  • All lip and eye pencils are just that! No matter weather they say lip or eye on them, they can both be used on both areas of the face. So if you have a cute peach or light brown lip pencil that is great for a day time look you can also smudge a bit of this on your upper and lower lash line to give a really soft look.
  • Any powder colour can also be used as an eye shadow. So you can use your blush as an eye shadow too!!
  • Look out for the more advanced cosmeceutical skincare ranges. The reason for this is a lot of these newly formulated results driven brands have the latest in skincare revolutions, such as the hydrating vital C serum from Image. This little beauty is so light weight, but yet contains enough moisture for even the driest complexions, that you can also use it on the eye area, ruling out eye cream!! Talk about a great recession buster!

Red Lipstick – How To Get One That Suits?

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Rachel here from La Spa…

Have you always wanted to wear red lipstick but could never find the right colour lipstick or maybe never Red Lipstickhave the confidence?

Well then this time of year is a perfect time to start!!

Firstly, you need to know the undertones of your skin, the underlying colours in your skin tone. This is important as a lot of red lipstick has underlying tones also and this way you can choose a lipstick that will match your skin.

Once you know what skin tone you have you can then match up to your lip stick.

The following are some red shades of lipstick and the matching skin tones…

  • Blue/Red – this shade is for somebody with pale/blueish undertones in their skin
  • Orange/Red – this shade is for somebody with sallow undertones in their skin
  • Pink/Red – this shade is for somebody with peachy undertones in their skin
  • Brown/Red – this shade is for somebody with darker undertones in their skin
  • Yellow/Red – this shade is for somebody with orange undertones in their skin.

If you are unsure about what skin tone you are, what not ask a member of staff at your local day spa.

So get shopping for your festive red lipstick!!

Top 3 Essential Jungle Products!!!

Rachel here from La Spa…Top 3 Beauty Products

When watching I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!! It made me wonder what my top 3 things to bring to the jungle to help keep me looking at my best would be?!!

As we all know it takes a whole cabinet of stuff for hair skin and make-up to keep us happy so what would you take with you?

Well considering that make-up, skin care and hair care is important to us I thought I would like to bring a product from each to look and feel at my best!!

  • My mineral foundation is a must as this contains a natural SPF, does not clog pores and will give my skin a fresh healthy look.
  • As mineral make up washes off with just water, I felt that a cleanser would not be as important as a good moisturiser so I could not leave without my vital C Serum from Image skin care, which is a cosmesuitical product that gives the best results on the skin for de-hydration.
  • As there is no electricity for hair straighteners and blow dryers!! I thought that a hair mask would be the best way of keeping your hair in good condition. This would also give me something to do if I was bored!!

I would love to know what thoughts you all have on what products you find essential….

Get then X Factor Look – Top Tips

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Rachel here from La Spa…

X Factor is everyone’s favourite Saturday night thing!! I’m sure all girls (me included) love to watch the not only for the singing but for the fashion and style too!!Make UpMake Up

I’m also sure that most of you wonder how to achieve some of the make-up or hair style looks on the show, so I thought that I would help you all out and give some tips on how to do this.

As we do not have our own stylists we need to know how to dress and create a look for ourselves that suits us and our colouring.

The main thing to know when shopping for clothes, hair colours or make-up colours is to know your own underlying skin tones.

If you have pale skin and flush quite easily then you probably have some pink undertones in your skin and therefore colours with peach and pale pinks and corals will look really good on you.

If you have an olive type skin and tan quite easily then you will have orange undertones in your skin and colours such as coppers or black or greens will look really good on you.

Another great way to judge what tones are in your skin is to stand in front of a mirror and using some of your own clothes garments with different shades of blue, red, orange, pinks etc, hold them up against your skin and take note of which shade makes you look more bright and awake and which shade makes you look more tired or drowned out. This is a sure fire way of figuring out which colours suit you best and so you will never buy another garment or make-up product that doesn’t suit your colouring.

If you would love to achieve some of the make-up looks on the show why not go to your local beauty salon and book in for a make-up lesson?

Make Up – Tips on Finishing Touches

Monday, October 11th, 2010

makeup-finishing-tipsRachel here from La Spa…..

Once you have your foundation correct and your eye look achieved you then need to apply the finishing touches to the look, depending on what look you are going for, night time, sun kissed, day time or work etc.
To apply bronzer use a large bronzing brush. Just apply the colour to areas that the sun would always hit on your face, so the forehead, down the nose, chin, cheek bones and chest. Not on the lower jaw line or neck.

For blush choose a colour that draws out the undertones from your skin. Then apply the blush on the apple of the cheek. If doing an evening look you can always contour your cheekbones slightly with the blush by applying it downwards from your cheekbone to the apple of your cheek. This will give the appearance of higher cheekbones.

To set the make-up, lightly apply a loose or pressed clear finishing powder all over the face. This will help to bind all the make-up and make it last longer on the skin.

Once any powder products have been applied to the skin you cannot go back and apply a cream based product on top, so be sure before you apply any powders that you are finished with you cream products.

For the lips the same rule applies as for the face. You need to prime the lips to help the product to last longer. We do this by applying a lip pencil all over the lip, not just around the line of the lip. This creates a base for the lipstick or gloss. If you like the colour of the pencil you can always just apply a colour or clear gloss on top. If not then choose your colour lip stick and apply either with a lip brush or by itself. When applying lipstick always make sure that you tilt your head back to be sure that you have applied the colour to all areas of the lip.

If you find that your skin gets a high shine on your t-zone half way through the day Jane Iredale have excellent facial sprits that help to set the make-up look and helps to keep that skin matified all day.

Make Up – Tips on How To Achieve the Smokey Eye Look

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Smokey Eye Make UpRachel here from La Spa…..

Last week we talked about the base for make-up and foundation application. Once the correct make up base is achieved the next step is to work on the eye look that you want.

Smokey eyes are still very much in fashion but you do not have to use just the colour black to get a Smokey eye look. The important thing is that you choose what colour you want (blue, black, grey or even greens and browns) for a Smokey eye and then make sure to have a dark medium and light shade of that colour.

Again just like foundation you need to prep the eye area and create a base for the shadow to sit on and help it to last.

You can do this by first applying an eye cream. Next apply an eye-lid primer, which works in the same way as a primer for the face does. It helps to smooth out the skin on the lid to create a good base for the make-up and also superficially reduces the appearance of fine lines.
The next step is to begin the shadow application. Depending on how dark or deep you want the colour to look, you could apply a cream shadow product in the colour you have chosen (let’s say black) this black cream product will be stronger in colour and you can press the next colour on top of it to create a dramatic and strong colour look. The key to any shadow application is blending. So when you apply the second layer of shadow on top of the cream shadow you need to blend away the colour nearly until it is smooth and there is no obvious line of black. This will give it the Smokey look and will make it look flawless.

You can then apply another layer of the shadow or a slightly lighter shade (grey maybe) over the lid and into the crease of the eye and again blend it slightly so there are no visible lines. You can do this until you are happy with the colour.
To brighten and open up the eye area slightly when doing a Smokey eye look it works really well if you apply a shimmer product in the inner corner of each eye.

Then to finish the look, use black liner on the upper and lower lid and black mascara. If you have small eyes you do not need to apply the liner right in to the inner corner. This way it will give the appearance of a larger, brighter eye.

Make Up – Tips on Foundation, Primer & Concealer

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Make Up FoundationRachel here from La Spa…..

Because the make-up industry is ever growing and the lines and lines of products are ever expanding, it’s hard to keep up! It’s also hard to keep yourself informed on what is best for you and your skin.

Hopefully the following info may help.

Choosing the right foundation and creating a great base for your make-up look

Once you have the correct foundation chosen then your make-up will already look amazing.

The best foundation on the market at the moment is mineral make-up. The reason for this is because they do not clog pores, are lightweight but with full coverage, non oily, non drying and anti-ageing. They also contain a physical natural SPF which is the best kind to have in a product and gives the best protection.

To choose the right make up foundation you need to get colour tested, however, always choose a foundation that matches the colour of your face and neck. Never use a makeup foundation to make you look darker, use bronzer for this.

When choosing a concealer for under your eye always go a shade lighter than your foundation to give the illusion that your eyes are bright and open.

When choosing a concealer for your face, match it up to your foundation colour.

The great thing about any mineral make-up including Jane Irredale, is that because it is all natural minerals, you can apply your cream concealer to your skin first, then your powder mineral foundation and you can build these layers over each other until you are happy with the coverage. (This is something you can not do with regular make-up as you cannot apply a cream over a powder)

If you are going to an event and need your foundation to last all day then you will need to use a primer. Jane Irredale do a lightweight non-oily primer which goes great underneath their foundations. What a primer does is it superficially smoothes out the skin so that the foundation goes on smoothly and evenly and lasts longer. A primer also superficially reduces the appearance of fine lines.

On top of your primer, foundation and concealer you will then need to apply a finishing powder. Again this is mainly if you are going somewhere that you need your foundation base to last as long as possible. A finishing powder is a clear powder that does not add colour but that sets the foundation and all the other processes and creates a seal on the make-up to help it to last. This product is also great to have in your bag to dust over your foundation half way through the day if you find you skin gets shiny or just to freshen up your look.
